Japanese Encephalitis claims 20 lives in Kailali in two weeks

At least 20 people have died of Japanese Encephalitis in far-western Kailali district in a matter of two weeks.

According to Radio Nepal, 10 Japanese Encephalitis deaths each have occurred in Tikapur and Dhangadi until Friday while over 80 patients have been undergoing treatment in various local hospitals. All deaths occurred in Seti Zonal Hospital and Tikapur Hospital.

There are 50 patients undergoing treatment at the zonal hospital while 32 persons have been admitted at Tikapur Hospital.

The disease, seen mainly in Terai parts from mid-July, started surfacing in Kailali a bit later this time – at the end of July. Children under 14 years have mainly been affected by the disease, which is communicated by Culex mosquito, the report said.

According to District Public Health Officer, Krishna Gopal Sinha, ani-Japanese Encephalitis immunization campaign, along with awareness programs, have been initiated following the spread of the disease.

“Due to the free treatment facility and the immunization drive, the impact of the disease in the district has been minimized significantly, “Radio Nepal quoted Sinha as saying. nepalnews.com mk Aug 20 05
