NHRC urges rebels to respect norms of human rights

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed serious concern over Maoist threat of action against several individuals and urged the Maoist to fully abide by its commitment to the norms of human rights and international humanitarian laws.

The Commission made such appeal to the rebels after it received reports that the rebel guerrillas passed threats to take physical action against three youths from Khimti-1 of Ramechhap district ten days ago.

A press release issued by the NHRC on Friday also urged the Maoists to immediately release Tirthaman Shrestha of Jalbire, Sindhupalchowk and create an environment for a displaced Shalikram Sharma to return to his home.

NHRC also urged the Maoists to create conducive atmosphere for ensuring that all the people displaced from their locations get fair chance to return to their domiciles or work places.

Meanwhile, issuing a press statement, the Informal Sector Service Centre (INSEC), condemned the Maoists' threat to take action against ordinary citizens.

INSEC has also urged the Maoists to immediately stop extortion, locking the houses, burglary, manhandling of people and other untoward activities. nepalnews.com pb Dec 23 05
