Families of disappeared people lock up NHRC
Family members of disappeared people by the state locked up the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) office for five hours on Thursday to pressurize the NHRC to speed-up search process to find the whereabouts of disappeared people.
They locked the NHRC from early 8 a.m. in the morning to 1 p.m. in the afternoon before the commission officials ask them to sit for the dialogue.
The officials of the NHRC assured them of full cooperation to find the whereabouts of the disappeared people.
Addressing the family members Sudip Pathak, member of the NHRC, informed that the NHRC is submitting a list of disappeared people by the state to the Home Minister and the committee formed by the government to find the whereabouts of the disappeared people.
He urged all not to take the NHRC as a body of the government as the commission is an autonomous body and responsible towards people.“As per the charter of the NHRC, it is responsible towards the parliament but in absence of parliament it is responsible towards people not the government,” he added.
He further said that the government is not implementing the recommendation of the NHRC, adding, “Of the 16 recommendations submitted by the commission, only two have been implemented so far.”
After discussions between the family members of disappeared people by the state and the NHRC, they agreed to work jointly to find the whereabouts of the disappeared people.
The scheduled programme of NHRC to publicise the report of human rights monitoring during ceasefire was also postponed due to the lock up. nepalnews.com pb Dec 29 05
