SC summons former Information Minister in contempt of court case
The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday ordered the then Minister for Information and Communication Tanka Dhakal to be present in person before the court within 15 days in connection with a contempt of court plea against him.
Acting on a writ petition filed by advocate Ananda Santoshi Rai, a single bench of Justice Damodar Prasad Sharma issued the ruling on the case pertaining to the contempt of court.
Secretary at the Ministry of Information and Communication Kumar Prasad Poudel and under-secretary Ambaraj Poudel have also been asked to present themselves at the court along with Minister Dhakal.
The petitioners have claimed the Information Ministry had asked Sagarmatha FM to stop the transmission of the FM station after the apex court had stayed the government action against the FM radio station following the government raid and seizure of transmission equipment of the station.
The police raided station and seized transmitting equipment from Radio Sagarmatha on November 27 as it was relaying the transmission of the BBC Nepali Service.
The government had initially stopped the transmission of news from FM stations as per the controversial new Media ordinance.
The Supreme Court is examining a number of media related cases including the controversial media ordinance that puts fresh curbs in independent media of the country. nepalnews.com pb Dec 29 05
