Journos stage demonstration
Nearly 200 journalists staged a peaceful demonstration at New Baneswore in Kathmandu Thursday afternoon demanding restoration of democracy and press freedom in the country.
Journalists, with black bands tied around their hands, displayed a black banner that read: "Total press freedom for peace and democracy.”
Central leaders of opposition Nepali Congress also expressed solidarity to the peaceful demonstration organized by the Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ).
This was the first demonstration under the second phase of protest programmes launched by the FNJ.
FNJ has been demanding withdrawal of all sorts of restrictions imposed upon the Nepali media in the aftermath of the royal takeover.
Addressing the gathering after half-an-hour long silent demonstration, president of FNJ Bishnu Nisthuri said the movement launched by the journalists won’t stop until press freedom and democracy was restored in the country.
General Secretary of Nepali Congress, Sushil Koirala, said authoritarian regimes did not last long around the world. He said the seven party opposition alliance had full support towards the peaceful movement being launched by the media community in Nepal. nepalnews.com by June 23 05
