Nepal Era New Year today

The Nepal Sambat (Nepal Era), which was started by Shankhadhar Shakhwaa entered its 1126th year Wednesday with the Newar community from all over the country eager to mark the new year with different festivities and cultural programs.

The Nepal Sambat follows the lunar calendar. Shakwaa freed Nepali people from their debts contributing the money from his own pocket and named the calendar 'Nepal Sambat.' The lunar calendar is followed for all cultural events and rituals.

The government declared Shankhadhar Shakhwaa as a national hero on November 18, 1999.

Vice-Chairman of the Council of Ministers Kriti Nidhi Bista and leaders of various political parties have extended their best wishes on the occasion of the "Nepal Sambat" 1126.

Vice-Chairman Bista in his message said all should take lesson for the welfare of the society as did by the propounder of Nepal Sambat, Shakwaa.

Former Prime Minister and President of Nepali Congress (NC) Girija Prashad Koirala in his message said that all should receive lesson from Shakwaa and Nepal Sambat. He also urged all to fight for the cause of truth.

In their message on the occasion of Nepal Sambat 1126, acting General Secretary of CPN-UML Bam Dev Gautam, Acting President of NC (Democratic) Gopal Man Shrestha, Chairperson of Nepal Bhasa Manka Khala Padma Ratna Tuladhar and leaders of various political parties also talked the historical aspect of Nepal Sambat and contribution of Shakwaa. nepalnews.com pb Nov 02 05
