Nepali labourer murdered in Dubai

A 23-year old Nepali labourer was murdered in Dubai on Thursday, reports said.

Beeshu Raj was allegedly beaten to death and six others were injured in the fight that broke out in the Arabtech Company labour camp in Jebel Ali, according the online edition of Khaleej Times.

The Dubai Police arrested 30 Asian nationals on Sunday in connection with the killing of Beeshu Raj, the report said.

Earlier, the police had arrested nine Nepalis, seven Indians and a Pakistani in connection with the killing following riots in the labour camp.

Police sources said that none of the arrested labourers who were referred to the Criminal Investigation Department had confessed to the crime. One of the arrested workers, however, said he saw nine persons beating the victim to death, according to Khaleej Times.

Citing the eyewitness, the paper reported that when the eyewitness went to the site, he saw a mob of over 200 Indians surrounding 30 Nepalis holding shafts, knives and stones. When the camp security personnel tried to intervene, he was beaten up by the inebriated labourers who continued to break furniture at the camp, the report added.

Two police patrol cars arrived at the site immediately but found it difficult to control the rioting crowd. According to a Dubai Police source, the police officials who tried to stop the fight were also attacked by the workers following which the emergency wing of Dubai Police rushed to the spot. The special task force took almost one hour to bring the situation under control.

The rioters hid themselves in their rooms but the police evacuated the 4,500 labourers residing in three buildings located in the compound, and arrested those who were involved in the fight. nepalnews.com pb Nov 08 07
