NGOs move Supreme Court against code of conduct
Several NGOs jointly filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court on Sunday demanding an interim order against the implementation of the recently introduced code of conduct that aims at controlling the activities of media.
Eight different NGO umbrella organisations including the NGO Federation Nepal and Dalit NGO Federation filed the case demanding a stay order.
Meanwhile, advocates Gopal Sibakoti ‘Chintan’ and Niru Shrestha Thursday will present their argument before a Supreme Court bench in favour of a case filed on Thursday against the same NGO code of conduct.
In the PIL writ petition filed on Thursday, the petitioners who described the NGO codes as being against the constitution of 1990 as well as international norms had demanded that the court scrap it.
Political parties, several national and international development agencies and human rights groups have denounced the ‘restrictive’ codes, demanding its withdrawal.
On the other hand, the government has from the very beginning stated the codes will help regulate the activities of non-governmental organisations and make them maintain financial transparency. nepalnews.com mk Nov 19 05
