Annan welcomes Alliance-Maoist accord
United Nations (UN) Secretary General Kofi Annan has welcomed the accord between the seven political parties and Maoists to restore democracy in the country.
Issuing a press statement on Wednesday Annan's spokesman said the UN secretary general ‘welcomes and is carefully studying’ the details of the understanding reached between a seven-party opposition alliance and the Maoist rebels to try to end King Gyanendra's direct rule.
The seven agitating political parties and Maoists issued a 12-point agreement between them for restoration of total democracy in the country.
"Annan strongly encourages the CPN-M to extend its unilateral ceasefire beyond December and to fulfill its commitment to human rights, and called for a reciprocal ceasefire by the Government to help end ‘a conflict that has brought immense suffering to the people of Nepal’ since it began in 1996." the statement added
“The Secretary-General remains ready to assist in any manner that would help bring about a peaceful resolution of the conflict,” the statement added.
Maoists announced a three-month unilateral truce on September 3 expressing solidarity to the ongoing agitation of the seven political parties.
The government has made no comment on the accord, saying it was studying the 12-point agenda to establish full-fledged democracy. nepalnews.com pb Nov 24 05
