NC will continue its fight against absolute monarchy: Koirala
Nepali Congress (NC) President Girija Prasad Koirala Tuesday said that the NC would not rest in its fight against 'absolute rule' until full-fledged democracy is restored in the country.
He urged the King to remain a ceremonial monarch if he wants to secure his position.
Addressing a mass meeting in Chitwan organised by the NC district committee Chitwan, Koirala said, “NC hasn’t yet chosen the state to become a republic and its objective is to seek an end to autocratic monarchy, restore total democracy and peace in the country,” adding, “Either the King has to remain a ceremonial monarch or he will just remain in history books. The choice is his.”
Koirala said the international community wishes to see a political change here through peaceful means but the King is showing an anti-democratic character and hence being isolated from them.
Koirala reiterated that the objective of the 12-point understanding with the Maoists is to bring an end to the autocratic regime.
Criticizing the government's remarks on the 12-point deal reached between the parties and Maoists, Koirala said, "We are not just reaching an understanding on the 12 points with the Maoists, but are continuing talks for the establishment of lasting peace in the country."
"The palace would have to bear a loss, if it attempted to disturb the peace process," Koirala added.
The Maoists and the political parties reached to 12-point agreement for the restoration of complete democracy in the country.
On the municipal polls slated for February 8 next year, he said, “The seven parties’ participation will only legitimise the King’s unconstitutional move.”
Speaking during the same programme, NC vice president Sushil Koirala said that the seven-party alliance would not hold any talks with the King unless the latter restores press freedom, human rights and people's sovereignty.
Ram Chandra Poudel, general secretary of the party urged the Maoist leadership to create an environment to send the displaced people back home. nepalnews.com pb Nov 30 05
