SC allows FM stations to broadcast news
The Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday ordered the government not to ban news from FM stations.
Issuing an interim order, a division bench of Justices Anup Raj Sharma and Min Bahadur Rayamajhi directed the government not to restrict news broadcasts on FM radio stations until the court gives its final decision on a writ challenging the government ban on FM radio stations from broadcasting news.
Acting upon a writ petition filed by advocate Tulsi Ram Niroula on October 28, the court also asked the government not to implement its directive of allowing FM stations only to transmit informative program, and not news.
The verdict came at a time when the newly promulgated Media Ordinance, which bars FM stations from transmitting news, is under examination at the SC. nepalnews.com pb Nov 30 05
