Depression is the main cause of suicide
The chief secretary of the Public Service Commission, psychologist Dr Niranjan Prasad Upadhyaya said that depression is the main cause of suicide.
According to the data of the District Police Office Kathmandu, in the month of Shrawan, there were 31 cases of suicide among which the 9 were male and 23 female. Similarly, in the next month Bhadra, there are 18 cases among which 7 were male and 11 female.
The suicide ratio is higher in developing countries than developed countries, Dr Upadhyaya said. He further said girls are twice as likely as boys to develop depression during adolescence and commit suicide. According to our social structure, most of women stay and work at home with no company and do not have a chance to share their feelings which makes them depressive, he added.
The restrictions from family, unsuccessful romantic relationship, education, unemployment, poverty and childhood are the factors of suicide in Nepal. If a child grows up without getting the love and affection from their parents, they become insecure and weak and cannot express the desire and feelings leading to depression, Dr Upadhyaya said.
When asked about Pooja Lama, a Nepali heroine who attempted suicide, Dr Upadhyaya said people in such high profile professions, earn name, fame, money and all things, but when they cannot maintain their status, depression arises and they commit suicide.
