Over 80 arrested;
nine vehicles vandalized (news update)
Police arrested more than 80 protestors from
different areas of the capital in course of their protest programs
to make the Valley bandh (shutdown strike) called by the seven-party
alliance a success.
According to the Valley police office, protestors were arrested
from Chabbhil, Maitidevi, New-Baneshwor, Ason and Mangalbazar
area of Patan as they tried to vandalize vehicles plying in the
road, defying the bandh.
According to ‘Joint People’s Movement Central Coordination
Committee’ at least 40 student activists affiliated to Nepal
Students Union (NSU) and All Nepal National Free Students Union
(ANNFSU) have been arrested from various locations while staging
protests to make the strike a success.
Some 20 students were arrested at Chabahil early this morning.
Similarly, three were held at Thamel and 15 in Lalitpur.
According to the ‘Joint People’s Movement Central
Coordination Committee’ the arrested include NSU vice-president
Mahendra Sharma and general secretary Basu Koirala; secretary
of Free Students' Union at the Pashupati Multiple Campus Raj Kumar
Dhungana and students activists Shiva Poudel, Ganga KC, Mahesh
Thapaliya, Dhurba Shrestha, Dhanraj Karki and Ram Chandra Shrestha.
Similarly, President of ANNFSU Khimlal Bhattarai, former presidents
Roop Narayan Shrestha and Yogesh Bhattarai, and leaders Yagya
Raj Sunuwar, Madhab Dhakal and Jeevan Lamichhane were also detained
by the police.
Police said at least nine vehicles were vandalized in different
parts of the city in course of their protest program.
Educational institutions, factories, business enterprises and
major markets except the inner streets remained shut following
the strike today.
Security forces were deployed at main squares of the city and
armed security men patrolled the city streets
The seven-party alliance, which is protesting against the royal
takeover of February 1, had called a general strike today to protest
against the recently promulgated controversial Media Ordinance
and the government's action against Kantipur FM. nepalnews.com
