EU condemns media ordinance, raid at Kantipur FM
The European Union has condemned the recent amendment in media laws and the government's action against Kantipur FM terming it as an government efforts to muzzle the free press of the country.
A Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on Friday said, "EU is deeply concerned about the actions of the government of Nepal to impose and enforce repressive restrictions on the media in Nepal. Amendments contained in the new media ordinance infringe upon the right to freedom of expression," according to reports.
The statement adds, "The Nepalese people have the right to live in a society characterized by respect for human rights and the rule of law."
The declaration further says, "The EU condemns the seizure at gunpoint of radio equipment from Kantipur FM station in Kathmandu by security forces. As the EU Troika said publicly during its 4-6 October visit, the people of Nepal want a proper functioning democracy with power vested in the people.
