Giri lashes out at NHRC, political parties, Kantipur and US ambassador

Vice Chairman of the Council of Ministers Dr Tulsi Giri

Vice Chairman of the Council of Ministers Dr Tulsi Giri has accused the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of partiality.

Addressing a peace rally in Gaur, the district headquarters of Rautahat district, Dr Giri charged the NHRC of being a horse without bridle saying neither does it have a boss to work under nor any servant.

He went on to add that the government could defeat the Maoists within three months if they were allowed to work without any hindrance.

Dr Giri also charged the NHRC of maintaining silence on Maoist atrocities against security personnel, whereas it openly criticizes the government forces if there is a minor mistake from them.

The royal appointed vice-chairman Giri said that the parties are like the Rana oligarchies who confined the King in a dark room and exploited the country. "Over a century of Rana oligarchy and 14 years of democratic rule are two sides of a coin," reports quoted Dr Giri as saying. He however said that peace can be restored in the country on the basis of reconciliation between the political forces and the government.

Dr Giri also said that the Kantipur daily is working like the eighth political party agitating against the incumbent government.

Dr Giri further said that the foreign elements and not the political parties were posing threat to the country. He added that foreign money is being injected to Nepal through three channels to harm the country. He did not elaborate.

On the decision of some donor countries to stop assistance after the February 1 royal move, Giri said that the government is not ready to dance to the tunes of foreigners for the sake of such assistance.

Stating that there is no dearth of donors to support Nepal, Giri warned foreigners not to interfere in the internal affairs of the country. "The government will not remain silent if they do not stop poking their noses in Nepal's internal matters," he said.

Coming down heavily on the US envoy to Nepal James F Moriarty, he said the US envoy is irritated on seeing the agreement to import arms from China and the financial support it has pledged and that is why he is criticizing the government. He said, "statements being given by the American ambassador won't affect the present government."

Dr Giri was speaking at a public gathering for the first time after being appointed cabinet vice-chairman after the February 1 royal takeover. nepalnews.com pb Oct 31 05
