Ceasefire a positive development: NHRC
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has termed the announcement of the three-month-long unilateral ceasefire by the Maoists as a positive development.
In a statement issued Monday, the NHRC expressed hope that the Maoists’ decision to go for ceasfire would be important in taking the peace process forward and will also help in the protection of human rights.
The Commission has also called upon the Nepal government and the Maoist insurgents to explore avenues for the negotiated settlement of the conflict and sign the ‘Human Rights Accord’ drafted by the Commission itself.
The Accord calls upon both the parties in the conflict not to target civilians, among others.
The Commission said it will carry out what it called ‘active monitoring’ of the situation of human rights during the period of ceasefire with the help of the civil society and on the basis of international standards and experiences.
The Commission has called upon all to lead the
ceasefire towards a situation of sustainable peace. nepalnews.com
