EU welcomes ceasefire

The European Union has welcomed the unilateral ceasefire announced by the Maoist rebels for a period of three months.

The EU has condemned the use of violence for political ends by the Maoists and “urged the CPN-M to implement their latest undertakings in good faith.”

The statement issued today by the British Embassy in Kathmandu (as the UK is the current EU Presidency) has urged the government to respond positively and concretely, with a view to building the necessary confidence required for a political solution to the conflict.

The statement has further said that all political forces need to work for a democratically based peace process leading to a durable negotiated solution, involving a national consensus and reintegration of the CPN-M into a multi-party democracy. nepalnews.com dr Sep 07 05
