Nearly dozen injured, scores arrested in 7-party protests

Nearly one dozen leaders and activists of seven opposition parties were injured and over four dozen others arrested from a protest rally in New Road, central Kathmandu, Sunday afternoon.

As in previous days, hundreds of seven-party activists took out protest rallies around New Road, chanting anti-government slogans and showing banners written in slogans against ‘royal autocracy’. Police baton charged, fires several rounds of tear-gas shells and used water canons to disperse the protesters as they tried to break the prohibitory orders effective in the area.

New Road area remained tense for hours in the afternoon. Shops were closed and vehicular movement completely blocked due to intermittent scuffles between the police and the protesters. There was heavy presence of riot police around New Road, Ratna Park and Bhotaiti areas.

Nepal Students Union leader Gagan Thapa and CPN (Marxist Leninist) leader Tanka Rai were seriously injured in police beating. Thapa, Rai and some ten other injured persons have been undergoing treatment at the Bir Hospital.

Over four dozen protesters including Nepali Congress leader Arjun Narsingh KC, student leaders Keshav Singh, Basu Koirala and Pradip Paudel, who were arrested during the protests, have been kept at the Mahendra Police Club. nepalnews.com mk/by Sept 11 05
