Over dozen injured in student protests

Over a dozen students were injured in a scuffle with the security officials during a protest program organized by the student organizations in front of Mahendra Ratna Campus, Tahachal, Kathmandu, Monday afternoon.

The students were carrying out demonstration against the recent government decision to file cases against nine arrested student leaders under the Public Security Act.

Security men intervened after protesting students attacked two government vehicles passing through the Tahachal area. A source at the Nepal Students Union (NSU) central office told Nepalnews that a vehicle of Nepal Telecom and an army vehicle were damaged when students tried to retaliate against police action in peaceful protests.

Army personnel fired several rounds of shots in the air as situation turned out of control, eyewitnesses said. Situation in the area remains tense at the moment and security presence in the area has been beefed up.

Mukunda Mani Ghimire, Deepak Lama and Ramesh Giri were seriously injured in the police action. The injured students were taken to nearby Teku Hospital and Bir Hospital for treatment and those admitted to Bir Hospital were discharged after preliminary treatment.

Protests programs were organized in public campuses in Kathmandu Valley and outside this morning. Clashes between police and agitating students were reported in Patan Multipal Campus where at least one student was injured in police beating.
