Nepal has become a party to the Kyoto Protocol of the United Nations
Framework Convention on Climate Change, reports said.
Foreign Minister Ramesh Nath Pandey deposited the instrument of accession
amidst a function organized during the Treaty Event at the UN Headquarters
on September 16.
Kyoto Protocol is an important international treaty that seeks to
strengthen the international response to climate change by arresting and
reversing the upward trend in greenhouse gas emissions. With the signing of
the treaty, Nepal has agreed to work with the international community to
address the common challenge of global climate change and its adverse
environmental consequences.
The Kyoto Protocol was adopted on December 11, 1997 and was opened for
signature from March 16, 1998 to March 15, 1999 at the UN Headquarters.
