Agitating parties considering to set deadline for House Revival
A senior leader of the seven party opposition alliance has revealed that the alliance—that is opposing the royal takeover—is likely to set deadline for the reinstatement of the parliament dissolved three years ago.
Addressing a mass meeting organised by his party in Lalitpur on Friday, chairman of pro-left People’s Front Nepal (PFN), Amik Sherchan, said that the alliance was planning to give King an ultimatum for the revival of the dissolved parliament.
Reinstatement of the dissolved House is one of the major demands of the opposition alliance that has been launching street protests calling for restoration of democracy and peace in the country.
“If the House is not reinstated by then, we will move towards establishing a ‘democratic republic’ in the country,” Sherchan warned.
Such a situation would bring the monarchy and mainstream political parties on a collision course leaving no room for reconciliation, analysts say.
Addressing the meeting, political scientist and a member of Nepali Congress mahasamiti Prof. Krishna Khanal said last fifty years-- since the fall of the Rana regime—had shown that monarchy and democracy could not go together. “The days of bringing democracy through royal decree are over and that the people should announce and press for the system they actually want,” he added.
Coordinator of the Citizens’ Movement for Democracy and Peace and former minister, Dr Devendra Raj Panday, alleged that the King wanted to run an autocratic rule although he had been claiming that he took over to restore peace, control corruption and maintain fiscal discipline. He alleged the government of failing to respond positively towards the announcement of unilateral truce by the Maoist rebels. nepalnews.com by Sep 24 05
