Civil society urges political parties to intensify stir
Representatives of Citizen's Movement for Democracy and Peace (CMDP) Monday
called on the leaders of major seven parties to intensify the pro democracy
movement without any fear.
They have called on the agitating political parties to concentrate their
agitation for the establishment of a democratic republic in the country
leaving behind their interest for power and also urged the people to
participate in the agitation directed towards restoring people's
sovereignty.
They also challenged the king to accept the election of Constituent
Assembly if the King thinks that he has people's support.
Addressing a mass meeting in Kirtipur, Prof. Krishna Khanal said that the
CMDP's movement was aimed at expressing solidarity with the parties'
movement until people's movement begins, reports said.
"A democratic republican set up may be possible if mainstream parties and
Maoists forge an alliance," he added. He also asked the agitating political
parties not to compromise in the agenda of reinstatement of the dissolved
House of Representatives as people are in favor of democratic republic.
Dr Devendra Raj Panday, the coordinator of CMDP said, "The parties should
review their ineffective agenda to intensify their agitation to establish a
democratic republic that will not be hindered by autocratic monarchy. The
parties should not eye an invitation from the palace for power and at the
same time also seek public support to serve the greater interest of people
in order to establish democratic republic."
Human rights activist Krishna Pahadi, writer Mukta Shrestha and social
worker Shiva Sharan Maharjan argued that since people had already come
forward for a peaceful movement for democratic republic, parties should not
launch their movement with a feeble mind.
Monk Bhikshu Anand said that no one can remain king without people's
support.
Sarvanam Theatrical Group staged a street drama entitled "Parkhal" during
the program, while noted poet Arjun Parajuli, singers Ramesh and Rayan,
Nanda Krishna enthralled the mass with their poems and songs in favor of
democracy. nepalnews.com pb Sep 27 05
