Koirala cautions King not to discard Constitution

As rumors of forming a new constitution is on, Nepali Congress (NC) President Girija Prasad Koirala has said that any move of King towards abrogating the constitution and promulgating a new one would be unfortunate for the monarchy itself.

Talking to reporters in his hometown of Biratnagar, Koirala said, "The King must not forget where he came from and under what circumstances he became King and when he became King," according to reports.

Hinting at the royal massacre, Koirala said, "The King was not in power before the incident occurred, so he [the King] should not forget this," adding, "If he forgets this, then he himself and the monarchy will remain in danger."

He ruled out possibility of working together with both the government and the Maoists saying that both the forces are moving with the power of gun and vowed to intensify the stir for restoring full-fledged democracy and people's sovereignty in the country.

Calling on all make good use of the Maoists' call for a unilateral ceasefire, Koirala said that it will be disastrous if this opportunity is missed.

Referring the recent comment of the cabinet vice-chairman Dr Tulsi Giri that the present constitution is the main obstacle for achieving the objectives of the February 1 royal takeover, NC president Koirala said, "He is like a tape recorder and says whatever the king tells him. So I am not afraid of such remarks," the Kantipur daily reported Koirala as saying.

Expressing his serious concerns over King Gyanendra's recent comments, NC President Koirala said that the King was attempting to humiliate the political parties.

While giving directives to the government nominated chairmen and vice-chairmen of eight districts in Bagmati Zone, Lalitpur on Sept 22, King Gyanendra had said that unnecessary activities taking place in the capital with the backing of foreign money.

On the query that he is appointing an acting president of the party, Koirala said he was not going to hand over his power to anyone. "I have not yet thought about handing over the responsibility of party president to anyone, "Koirala added.

Koirala accused some of the men who were against him from within the party of spreading the rumour after he had some health problems a few days ago. nepalnews.com Sep 28 05
