No `donations’ to be raised from Kathmandu: CPN (Maoist)

The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) has clarified that it has got no programme right now to collect `donations’ from Kathmandu.

The online version of Janadesh, the mouthpiece of the underground party, on Tuesday quoted a statement issued by Bagmati-Narayani regional bureau of the CPN (Maoist) as saying that the party unit is not involved in raising ‘donations’ from people in the capital.

“We have not sent letters to anybody asking for donations,” the party said. It also appealed people to inform them through their ‘contact sources’ if anybody tried to raise money in the name of the Maoists.

The statement, however, did not reveal who their ‘contact sources’ were.

The official Maoist statement has come amid reports that the rebels were engaged in raising forced donations from businessmen, officials and even ordinary households across the country --on the eve of ‘Dashain’ festival -- taking benefit of three-month-long unilateral ceasefire called by their party in early September.

Security sources said the rebels had extorted millions of rupees in the past from the capital valley alone in the name of ‘donations’ to their party. They claimed that such attempts have declined substantially over the past few months due to intensification in security activities.

Earlier, the security agencies had appealed public to inform the nearest security post if anybody approached them for ‘donations’ posing himself/herself as a Maoist. nepalnews.com by Sep 29 05
