Dozens of opposition activists, leaders arrested in Kathmandu
Police have taken into custody dozens of opposition activists and leaders from various parts of the capital, Kathmandu, on Thursday as they were organizing peaceful protests by defying the prohibitive orders.
Those arrested include Nepali Congress central committee member Sujata Koirala, NC leaders Meena Pandey, Gopal Rai, Jagdish Narsingh KC, Dr. Kedar Narsingh KC and Dr. Tika Pokhrel. NC leader Gopal Raj Pahadi has been injured during scuffle with police.
The CPN (UML) leaders Ashok Rai, Kamal Koirala, Bir Bahadur Singh and Mrs. Bidya Bhandari have also been arrested while taking out demonstrations.
Nepali Congress (Democratic) party said police took into custody over a dozen party activists including Bhisma Raj Angdembe, Shambhu Raut, Bhagwan Shakya and student leader Saroj Neupane. The party said its members, Nath Maharjan, and Jitendra Shrestha, were injured in police action.
Reports say members of the seven opposition parties have carried out rallies calling for restoration of peace and democracy in the country from around 50 places across the country on Thursday.
