Over 400 protestors held
Over 400 pro-democracy protestors were arrested from different parts of the country on the first day of the four-day general strike called by the seven party alliance (SPA).
They were arrested while carrying out protest rallies in defiance of prohibitive orders to make the general strike a success.
A press release issued by the CPN-UML said over 250 party activists were arrested from Kathmandu, over 50 from Hetauda and over 35 from Bharatpur of Chitwan.
The statement said police arrested 31 from Koteshwor, 15 from Chhetrapati, 65 from Chahabil, 50 from Maitidevi and 21 from Gongabu. Among the arrested include central-level leaders Bidhya Bhandari and Rajendra Shrestha.
The statement further said that security forces carried out search operation at the residence of acting general secretary of the party, Amrit Kumar Bohara and other party leaders.
Another statement issued by the CPN-UML said a UML activist who was injured during police action at the torch rally in Rajbiraj, the district headquarter of Saptari district, died while undergoing treatment at Rajbiraj hospital.
CPN-UML area committee member of area number 9 and former vice chairman of Malekpur village development committee Darshan Yadav was killed in the incident, the statement adds.
Likewise, a press release issued by the Nepali Congress said police arrested over 70 leaders and activists of the party from Sundhara, Maitidevi, Machapokhari, Bangemudha, Sitapaila, Chahabil, New Baneshwor, Kalanki, Gongabu and Basundhara.
Among the arrested included Mina Pandey, Sujata Koirala, Dinbandhu Shrestha, Gopal Rai, Dr Kedar Narsingh KC, Suresh Malla, Smirtinarayan Chaudhary, Haribhakta Adhikari, Sadhuram Khadka and others.
Meanwhile, People’s Front Nepal (PFN) has said that police arrested more than 25 cadres including two central committee members from protest rallies in different parts of the country.
According to PFN, 20 cadres including two central committee members Sashi Shrestha and Yamuna Bhusal have been taken into custody from Kathmandu.
Likewise, two cadres were arrested in Kaski and four in Hetauda.
Similarly NC-D said police arrested dozens of party activists from different parts of the Valley.
The SPA announced a four day long general strike to restore peace and complete democracy in the country. According to the SPA, they have carried out rallies in 50 places across the country on today. nepalnews.com pb Apr 06 06
