Rights activists, professionals defy curfew order, court arrests

Leading human rights activists, doctors and professionals defied curfew orders in Kathmandu on Saturday and courted arrest.

Police took into custody over two dozen rights activists and professionals as they tried to take a protest rally in front of TU Teaching Hospital at Maharajgunj this afternoon.

Those who have been detained include former Speaker of the House of Representatives Damannath Dhungana, former Justice at the Supreme Court Laxman Aryal, rights activists Padma Ratna Tuladhar, Charan Prasai, Malla K. Sunder and Dr. Mahesh Maskey.

Talking to reporters, rights activist and lawyer Gopal Siwakoti “Chintan” said they had decided to defy the curfew imposed by the government since the order was “unconstitutional.” “This government itself is unconstitutional. So, citizens must defy all types of (prohibitory) orders issued by this government,” he added. nepalnews.com by Apr 08 06
