SSP Thapa ignores NHRC summons
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Armed Police Force Madhav Thapa has failed to respond to the National Human Rights Commission’s summons and the NHRC may ask the government to take action against Thapa if he fails to respond to the commission’s calls.
“The commission is likely to recommend to the government to take action against Thapa if he does not show up at the commission office,” report quoted a NHRC source as saying.
The commission is considering sending one more official reminder to Thapa on Monday, asking him to visit the commission office. “If he ignores our call, we will be forced to ask the authorities to take action against him,” the sources said.
NHRC had sent a letter to Thapa on April 13, summoning him before the commission for interrogation about the excessive use of force by security forces in Gongabu, Kathmandu, on last Tuesday.
Instead of presenting himself in person before the National rights watchdog, AFP headquarter sent a letter to it Sunday stating that Thapa could not appear before the office because of hectic security meetings.
The excessive use of force including opening fire at the protestors had caused injuries to hundreds of demonstrators in Gongabu. The forces there were under Thapa’s command.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Kamal Thapa has alleged that the NHRC can not summon security commanders in the field. nepalnews.com pb Apr 17 06
