Lok kavi Ali Miya passes away

Lok kavi (folk poet) Ali Miya passed away at the age of 88 on Thursday at his residence at Miyanpatan, Pokhara.

Miya, who picked up the words and tunes of villages and crafted songs, was suffering from paralysis, asthma, cataract and renal disease for the last 14 months.

He had lost speech on Wednesday night.

He is survived by four sons, three daughters and over 60 grandchildren.

Miyan was decorated with a dozen honours and awards including the Jagadamba Award, the Indra Rajya Laxmi Award and the Siromani Award.

He has also published a number of verse anthologies like 'Birakta Lahari', 'Nepali Jhyaure Geet Sangraha', 'Nyauliko Pukara', 'Pahadko Udgaar', 'Setiko Suskera', 'Ujyalo Bhaisakyo', 'Samjhanako Diyo' and 'Ali Miyanko Awaz'.

Meanwhile, senior litterateur and genealogist Dharanidhar Dahal also passed away at the age of 78 at his residence in Itahari.

Dahal, founder chairman of the Itahari Literary Group, has contributed a lot to the development of Nepali Literature.

Dahal has penned over a dozen books on political history, language, caste and scripts.
