DPM Sherchan warns of quitting govt
Deputy Prime Minister Amik Sherchan on Monday warned of resigning from his post if the government didn’t change its working style.
Emerging out of a cabinet meeting at Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala’s residence in Baluwatar this morning, Sherchan said, “If the government continues to go like this, I will quit.”
Sherchan, who heads the People’s Front Nepal (PFN), said the government had been dillydallying in the peace process and added that he had serious reservation over the performance of the government as unimportant issues were getting priority instead of political issues. The PFN leader also holds the health portfolio in the government.
DPM Sherchan also expressed discontent over the remarks of PM Koirala during a meeting with industrialists on Sunday that the King should be given space in democracy in order to avoid possible political discord in the country.
“It is the people who will decide whether or not to keep the monarchy, not the Prime Minister,” he commented and added that he had registered his objection over the PM’s reaction at the cabinet meeting.
While Koirala’s remarks invited sharp reactions from various quarters including the Maoists, Sherchan was the first person from the ruling coalition to express grudge over the PM’s views. nepalnews.com mk Aug 07 06
