Over dozen MVA protesters injured in police action

More than a dozen members of the Maoist Victims Association (MVA) were injured when police intervened into their protest programme at Bhotahiti, Kathmandu, on Tuesday.

Police started baton-charging and rounding up the protesters soon after they started blocking traffic at Bhotahiti in the morning, demanding compensation to the families of those killed by the Maoists during the decade-long conflict, return of the properties seized by the rebels and rehabilitation of all the internally displaced persons (IDPs).

MVA chairman Dharma Raj Neupane said at least 200 persons were arrested and more than a dozen others were injured in police action during the chakka jam. He said police prevented MVA activists from taking the injured to hospital for treatment.

All arrested persons, kept at different ward police offices, were released in the evening, according to him.

The Maoist victims resumed their protests from last week with a 10-point demand. They have demanded that the government provide Rs1 million to the families of each person killed by the Maoists.
