The meeting, which was initially planned for six days, today discussed the proposal on the concept of the restructuring of the state presented by a task force headed by general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal.

According to an UML source, the meeting decided to a forge broad alliance of all the democratic political forces in order to find forward-looking solution to the problems facing the country. The central committee meeting will continue on Friday as well.

The meeting on Tuesday passed the general secretary’s political report, which speaks in favour of democratic republic, restructuring of the state, timely election to constituent assembly and a referendum to decide the fate of monarchy.

The12-point report said that elections to the constituent assembly should be held within mid-May 2007 and provision should be made for a referendum to resolve the issue of monarchy along with the constituent assembly elections.

Nepal’s political report also criticised the ‘sluggish’ performance of the government and the untoward activities of the Maoists. nepalnews.com mk Aug 17 06
