Extensive homework essential for party unity: Deuba

Speaking at a programme in the capital on Friday, Deuba said, "Since there are statutory and ideological differences between the two Congresses, an extensive groundwork is essential to find lasting unity."

In response to the call of NC President Girija Prasad Koirala for dignified unification, Deuba said that such unification meant giving political security and dignity to all leaders and cadres of his party.

However, vice-president Prakash Man Singh said that increasing national and international pressure for party unification could be meant to tame the rising strength of communist forces across the country.

According to Singh, there is clear ideological difference between the two parties because NC President Koirala stands for ceremonial monarchy and NC-D stands for democratic republic through constituent assembly polls and added that such differences should be removed before party unity.

Deuba also urged Maoists to lay down arms before joining the interim government so that it would benefit them by increasing their national and international credibility.

Meanwhile party leaders -- Pradip Giri, Bhismaraj Aangdambe and Surendra Pandey of Nepal Tarun Dal, fraternal organization of the party, expressed skepticism about the intention of the leadership and their future after party unification. nepalnews.com pb Aug 19 06
