Fifth Gold for Nepal
Kushal Shrestha’s excellent performance has given Nepal its fifth Gold medal in the finals of the 65 kg male Kumite beating Sri Lankan RJ Edwards in the South Asia Games at Sugathdasa Indoor Stadium, Colombo, Sri Lanka, Thursday evening.
On the way to the finals, Kushal earned a bye in the quarterfinals and defeated H Yadav of India 8-2 in the semis. Shrestha showed an attacking game in the finals to earn an 8-3 victory against RJ Edwards to give Gold to Nepal.
"This is due to our hard effort and discipline," Kushal Shrestha reacted after winning the medal. "We have worked hard and with some good and fair decisions from referees, our players can earn more Golds in Karate," Coach Dipak Shrestha told Nepalnews. Another medal prospect, Niroj Karmacharya, lost his first round bout against Pakistani UZ Zaman by 3-2.
Meanwhile, Nepal has won a rare bronze medal in Swimming. Though the event took place Wednesday, the Aquatics Union of Sri Lanka declared Nepal as the third position winners after Bangladesh and Pakistan were declared 'disqualified" in the 4x100 m relay.
