Rajendra Bhadari wins sixth Gold for Nepal
Rajendra Bhandari has won a sixth medal for Nepal in the 5000 m men’s event bettering his previous record in 14:01:19 seconds at the Sugathdasa outdoor stadium, Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Rajendra Bhandari ran an excellent marathon and beat Indian and Sri Lankan athletes in the final lap. "This is due to my hard work and effort from the coaches," a jubilant Bhandari said. "This is for my country," he added.
Kanchi Maya Koju won the silver medal in the 10,000m women’s marathon with excellent running losing out to an Indian athlete; Sri Lanka came third.
Kabbadi
The Nepalese men’s Kabbadi team bowed out from the tournament after it suffered its third consecutive loss in the tournament as it was manhandled by Bangladesh 64-14 points. Similarly, the women’s team also suffered their third defeat in the tournament, but went down fighting 28-24.
Archery
Nepal's hope in Archery was shattered when lone quarterfinalist Prem Chochange was defeated by Indian Jayantha Talukdar 95-111 in the men’s individual event. Kishor Gurung was ousted from the first round when Bhutan's Tashi Dorji defeated him 97-95.
Volleyball
The ladies volleyball team was also ousted from the tournament when it suffered a hard-fought loss against Sri Lanka. The ladies team performed well but lost 25-20, 25-16 and 25-17.
Karate
Nepalese Karatekas performed below-par and the two medal prospects, Bikram Meche and Bind Shakya lost to Sri Lankan and Pakistan players respectively in the first round matches.
Wrestling
Dharmaraj Yadav lost to Bashir Bhola of Pakistan but brought some smiles back home winning the silver medal at the Sugathdasa Indoor stadium. Similarly, Buni Lal Raut won a bronze medal for Nepal.
Taekwondo
Kumar Manandhar won a silver medal after losing the finals against Pakistani Malik Shahzad in the 54 kg category. nepalnews.com Bikram Thapa (in Colombo) Aug 24 06
