First gay marriage in Nepal
In what seemed as a strange event for general Nepali people, two men Anil Mahaju and Diya Kashyap got married on Saturday, on the day of the Haritalika Teej, one of the greatest festival of Hindu women.
The Blue Diamond Society (BDS), an organization working for the sexual minorities organized the first official gay marriage of Nepal.
“We love each other. That is why we are getting married,” Diya told Nepalnews.
Dressed in a red sari and a glittering see-through veil, the shy bride looked just like any other Nepali bride.
The male bride also said that the new constitution should guarantee the rights of homosexuals in the new constitution.
Same-sex marriage has become an accepted practice in many countries around the world but the concept is new to Nepal. Nepali law still bars same-sex marriages.
Various organizations have been pressurizing the government to make laws that allow same-sex marriages in the new constitution. nepalnews.com pb Aug 27 06
