Fifteenth International Day of the Disabled today
Along with the world, Nepal is also observing the International Day of the Disabled today by organizing various functions.
The National Federation of the Disabled is marking the day with week-long activities focused at promoting the causes of the disabled. This year's theme of the Day of the Disabled is "increase access of the disabled to electronic technology."
The federation will be holding interactions on human rights of the disabled people with representatives of electronic media and political parties for one week.
The federation will also hold rallies in the city today. It will hold a mass meeting in Basantapur also.
According to estimates, there are 3 million disabled people in Nepal – half of them women.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has issued a statement saluting the contributions made by disabled people during the People's Movement. In the statement issued on the occasion of this day, PM Koirala has said the democratic government will not fail in protecting the rights and interests of disabled people and in efforts to bring them to mainstream of national development.
