Denmark to provide US$ 1 million for peace process
The Danish government has pledged US$ 1 million to the Trust Fund to finance the UN peace mission in Nepal, as support to the UN peace work in Nepal.
A press release issued by the Embassy of Denmark in Kathmandu said Denmark is also prepared to support the UN peace mission with staff having civilian and military and civilian backgrounds.
The Danish parliament has already approved 500 million NPR in 2007 for activities related to the peace process and the process of creating a new constitution in Nepal. It is also expected that 500 million NPR will be given for the peace process in 2008, the release further said.
The release quoted the Danish minister for Development Cooperation, Ulla Tørnæs, who recently visited Nepal as saying, “I am pleased with the positive developments in Nepal, including the important step of the signing of a peace accord between the Seven Party Alliance and the Maoists. Denmark has supported the efforts for peace with the Maoists and has always supported democracy and human rights in Nepal.”
Denmark will also support the involvement of the UN in the peace process, including the monitoring of weapons, as requested by the Government of Nepal and the Maoists, the release further said. nepalnews.com dr Dec 04 06
