RPP to launch nationwide campaign to change its policy
Following the steps of Nepali Congress (NC), the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), too, has decided to launch a nationwide campaign beginning December 16 to "learn about the thoughts of party workers and people" on whether the party should change its policy vis-à-vis monarchy.
The RPP is currently embroiled in a great internal churning with some of its leaders demanding that the party should also shed its belief on "constitutional monarchy" given the big change in the people's aspirations.
Such a churning in a traditionally centrist and monarchist party has been seen with great interest. In fact, the mere start of such a debate in a party that is filled with leaders with Panchayat background has indicated the political weakening of monarchists, according to analysts.
Following the meeting of Central Working Committee (CWC), on Wednesday, party spokesperson Parshuram Khapung said that the RPP will not go back from the May 18 Declarations of the House of Representatives – which severely clipped the authority of the King. He said that there is, however, a possibility that the party could move further ahead from the Declaration. nepalnews.com sd Dec 07 06
