Former CJ Upadhyaya to head NHRC
The Constitutional Council named former Chief Justice Bishwanath Upadhyaya as the chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday.
A meeting of the three-member Council held at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar, recommended the former CJ as the chairman of the NHRC.
Council member Subash Nemwang told reporters that the meeting has recommended Gauri Pradhan and Lila Pathak, both rights activists, as the NHRC members. Two other members would be named after the formation of the interim cabinet, it is learnt.
Upadhyaya was the chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee in 1990.
The Constitutional Council has the Prime Minister, Speaker and Chief Justice as the members.
The NHRC has remained without its leadership since last five months. Representatives of donor community had last week met with Prime Minister GP Koirala to ask him to appoint officials in the NHRC as the earliest. They said monitoring of the rights situation in the country had been hampered due to the delay in appointing officials at the rights watchdog. nepalnews.com mk Dec 18 06
