Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has urged the newly nominated chief of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Bishwanath Upadhyaya to take up the responsibility.

Koirala reached the residence of the former chief justice in Gyaneshwor at around 10 a.m. and urged the reluctant Upadhyaya to head the NHRC.
During the half-an-hour talk, Koirala expressed commitment to appoint other members of the commission from all sections of the society and promised of no interference from the parties and the government in the works of the commission. The government has said representatives from women, janajatis, Dalits and Madhesi communities would in included in the commission.
Stating that other members of the commission were appointed without his consent, Upadhyaya had criticised the procedures of the appointment. Gauri Pradhan and Lila Pathak are the two other members named.
The government had appointed Upadhyaya as the new NHRC chairman on the recommendation of the Constitutional Council (CC) on Monday.
It is learnt that Upadhyaya is still undecided on whether to take up the responsibility.
Upadhyaya was the head of the constitution drafting committee in 1990 and had served as the chief justice for nearly four years. nepalnews.com ia Dec 19 06
