Britain positive about involving ex-Gurkhas in arms management
British ambassador to Nepal Dr Andrew Hall has said the British government views positively the idea of involving former British Gurkha soldiers in arms and armies management in Nepal.
The British envoy said this during a meeting with CPN (UML) general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal Wednesday morning. He, however, made clear that serving British Gurkha soldiers would not be involved in this process, media reports said.
The eight parties and the United Nations have been saying that retired British and India Gurkha servicemen could be involved in the management of arms but no formal agreement has been reached.
Dr Hall further said Britain was keen on the helping Nepal in its peace process, informing that Rs 30 million British grant was being approved soon for the management of arms and armies in Nepal.
He had an hour-long meeting with Nepal at the latter's residence at Koteshwor.
The UML general secretary said the parties were putting collecting efforts to hold constituent assembly elections within the stipulated time, mid-June next year. He said support from friendly nations would be crucial in the transitional phase. nepalnews.com mk Dec 20 06
