Students protest mismanagement in universities
All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU), the student wing of the CPN (UML), organised protests the capital Thursday against the mismanagement in public universities due to long delay in appointing high officials.
Carrying banners and placards, thousands of students joined in the rally that began from Pradarshani Marg and concluded at the Ratna Park in the afternoon. They also chanted slogans against the dilly-dallying in appointing officials at the universities for months.
Addressing the gathering after the rally, ANNFSU president Thakur Gaire said the government had been ignoring the demanding of students. “We urge the government not to underestimate the strength of students who were in the forefront of the people’s movement,” he said.
Four public universities – Tribhuvan University, Pokhara University, Nepal Sanskrit University and Purwanchal University – remain without vice-chancellors and other high-ranking administrative officials for months while campus chiefs in dozens of campuses affiliated with these universities are yet to be appointed. The vacuum in the universities has led to postponement of regular examinations, convocations and many other managerial works.
An ANNFSU delegation that had gone to the Prime’s Minister’s residence in Baluwatar to hand over a memorandum to PM Girija Prasad Koirala on Wednesday was denied a meeting with Koirala.
UML’s Dr Mandal Siddi Manandhar, who looks after the education portfolio in the seven-party cabinet, has been blaming PM Koirala for not showing interest in filling the senior posts in universities.
The ANNFSU central committee has warned that it would launch nationwide protests if the government fails to make appointments in the universities immediately. nepalnews.com mk Dec 21 06
