Maoists oppose govt decision to re-establish police posts

Maoists have expressed serious reservation over the government’s decision to immediately re-establish police posts as preparation for holding the elections of the constituent assembly.

The informal meeting of the party held this morning said that the decision of the government is against the agreements reached between the ruling seven party alliance and the Maoists.

According to reports, Maoist chairman Prachanda, addressing the informal meeting, said that the government is doing things against the agreements reached between the government and the Maoists.

He also added that the government’s decision should not be implemented before formation of interim government including the Maoists.

Monday’s cabinet meeting has decided to immediately re-establish displaced police posts, saying, re-establishment of police posts is essential to control crimes and create fearless environment for the elections of the constituent assembly.

The cabinet took the decision of reinstating police posts following a meeting between Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and Maoist chairman Prachanda.

Prime Minister Koirala has reportedly asked Maoist chairman Prachanda not to obstruct any move of the government to hold the CA polls in stipulate time.

The rebels have captured about half a dozen reinstated police posts in various southern districts like Kapilvastu, Nawalparasi and Udaypur. Of the 1,271 police posts displaced because of the rebels' attack or fear of possible attacks, more than 200 have been already reinstated despite Maoist opposition.

The meeting also discussed about the party’s strategy to go to the people in the elections of the constituent assembly, among others.

Meanwhile, talking with Nepal FM, one of the members of the Maoist talks team, Dev Gurung said that the government is inviting confrontation by re-establishing police posts without their consent.

Stating that the government is not moving as per the agreement with the Maoists, leader Gurung urged the government to move ahead as per the agreement. nepalnews.com pb Dec 26 06
