Govt forms probe commission on Nepalgunj unrest
The government has formed a high-level panel to investigate into the unrest that has gripped the mid-western town of Nepalgunj since Tuesday morning.
Home Minister Krishna Prasad Situala said at a press conference organised Wednesday evening that the commission chaired by Butwal Appellate Court judge, Purusottam Parajuli, has been mandated to inquiry into the damages caused during the riots, its reasons and effects and recommend action against those involved in fuelling communal tension in the town.
The three-member committee has been given 15-day timeframe to submit its report to the government. The commission members will fly to Nepalgunj on Thursday.
Describing the unrest in Nepalgunj as unfortunate, the Home Minister said the local administration and security agencies have been directed to maintain optimal vigil against those trying to disrupt peace and communal harmony in the area.
The government is cautious not to let such violent activities take place in future, he said, informing that the government has extended its heartfelt condolence to the family of Kamal Giri, who lost his life during clashes between two groups in Nepalgunj yesterday.
Meanwhile, the Banke District Administration Office has clamped indefinite curfew amidst sporadic violence around the town.
State-owned Radio Nepal said at least two persons were injured when police opened fire at a mob that was trying to break curfew in the evening.
The CPN (Maoist) organised a goodwill rally in the afternoon, which was participated by tens of thousands of people from various communities, religions and political parties, according to reports. nepalnews.com mk Dec 27 06
