NRNs’ fail to get voting rights
Despite repeated requests from Non Residential Nepalis (NRNs’) to provide them voting rights in the upcoming elections of the constituent assembly, the House of Representatives (HoR) passed the Bill amending the Voters List, depriving NRNs’ to vote.
The bill that was passed on Thursday excluded Nepalese living abroad to vote in the Constituent Assembly elections.
Lawmakers of People’s Front Nepal voted against the Bill saying it was not right not to grant Nepalese living in foreign countries the right to vote in the constituent assembly elections.
Answering the queries of lawmakers, Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula said, “It was not possible practically to grant them the voting right.”
The Bill has declared that an 18-year- old will have a vote.
The Bill also states that the Election Commission will make a temporary voters’ list of civil servants, personnel of the army and police forces, detainees and the officials deployed to conduct the elections and members of the Peoples Liberation Army.
They will have the right to vote only for 204 of the constitutional assembly members. These members will be elected on the basis of proportional representation. nepalnews.com pb Dec 29 06
