Working Journalist Act amendment bill strengthens protection of journalists

The media task force lead by Kashi Raj Dahal has finalised the bill to amend the Working Journalist Act with provisions to protect the rights of the working journalists and opportunities for their capability enhancement.

The proposed bill for first amendment of the Working Journalist Act states that the employing media house must ensure strengthening the working efficiencies of journalists and guarantee their right to form trade unions.

Similarly, the bill proposes that media houses must recruit journalists through public advertisement with minimum contract period of two years. The journalists must be given the appointment letter, which had been a major problem in the past.

The media houses must also categorise the duties and position of the journalists working, as per the nature of their work.

The taskforce, with 16 amendments proposed, is scheduled to hand over the draft bill to the government by Sunday. nepalnews.com ia Dec 29 06
