Maoists padlock municipal, VDC offices in Jhapa
The Maoists have padlocked the offices of two municipalities and two VDC offices in the eastern district of Jhapa, saying that they would not allow these offices to operate unless there is an interim government at the centre.
Maoist activists placed locks at the offices of Damak Municipality, Mechinagar Municipality, Juropani VDC and Koribari VDC Sunday. They have said the lockout is meant for pressuring the government to quickly promulgate the interim constitution and form an interim government inclusive of the Maoists.
Officials working in these offices were forced to return, as the Maoists didn’t let them inside, according to reports.
Meanwhile, the Biratnagar Sub-metropolitan City office, which was locked by the Maoists on Friday, remains still closed. Reports said the municipal officials this morning placed another lock on the main gate, demanding the municipal administration create an atmosphere so that works could be carried out smoothly.
The Maoists have not said anything as to when they would remove the locks. nepalnews.com mk Dec 30 06
