NT employees surround offices

Employees of state-owned Nepal Telecom (NT) have surrounded the office of the managing director in Kathmandu and regional directors in various regions to put pressure for the resumption of pre-paid mobile service on Wednesday.

The employees have been working with black bands as symbol of protest since last few days. The agitators said that they would continue to surround the offices for the next three days.

Employees had begun their protest against the management of NT from Monday. They said that they would be forced to announce stronger protest programmes if the government and the management of NT failed to meet their demands on time. The employee unions had submitted an ultimatum to the management on February 1 to resume the service within seven days.

The management has not yet responded to the demands of agitators.

The agitators say that NT has lost millions in income due to frequent closure of the service. Pre-paid mobile services have been suspended since January 19. The service was resumed after six months of closure during the royal takeover last year. It was resumed after strong protest from employees and consumer groups.

The government has been citing security reasons for closure of the service. nepalnews.com ia Feb 15 06
