Opposing the decision of the Election Commission (EC) not to allow the party to use plough as its election symbol, the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) led by Pashupati Shumsher Rana on Wednesday announced to boycott the upcoming municipal polls.

A meeting of the ‘central work performance committee’ held at Rana’s Maharajgunj residence this morning decided to boycott the polls slated for February 8, dubbing the EC’s decision as undemocratic.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, Rana said, “Taking seriously the EC’s decision which is against the multiparty system, the RPP has decided to boycott the municipal elections.” The party has decided to challenge the EC’s decision at the Supreme Court on Friday, according to him.

A meeting of the RPP Central Committee is underway at the moment at the party headquarters to discuss decision of the meeting in the morning. Party officials said the Central Committee is set to endorse the decision to boycott the polls.

Following an extended debate at its head office Tuesday involving both the RPP establishment and the newly formed ‘RPP’ led by Home Minister Kamal Thapa, the EC had announced to freeze the election symbol claimed by both factions.

Thapa-led RPP had appealed to the EC to recognise it as the authentic RPP and grant the election symbol.

A special convention of the dissident faction had formed the rival RPP electing Home Minister Thapa as its chairman. nepalnews.com mk Jan 25 06
